Day 4 from Spokane to Moses Lake

United States From United States More from United States on September 8, 2008

I think the most fun thing about today was the countless dust devils (read about them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dust_devil ) we saw while passing through the heartland of Washington. We captured a few in pictures (while still traveling down the highway), so take a look (remember "photo tab at top of weblog). One crossed the road and jerked Wayne's helmet by surprise (made me laugh quite hard). but it didn't impact me.

We stopped in quite a few of the little farm communities for geocaching and learned about many of the settlers that farmed the land in 1800's. In the little town of Odessa (which by the way was dry & dusty much like the Odessa, TX where Tony & Sonya were born), the cache was at the local history museum and they had an actual working windmill so you could see how they draw water from the underground.

Wayne was a little dissappointed since we didn't come across any rattlesnakes (and believe me several of the caches were out in dry, hot fields in the middle of nowhere). We thought we heard rattlers at Cache Crater but it turned out to be a swarm of insects inside the crater.

We saw the Grand Coulee Dam and rode alongside Banks Lake (for a long, long time, that is a neverending lake).

We have now settled down in the hotel room in Moses Lake (Tony lived here many years ago after college). We will be homeward bound tomorrow, only a few caches to go. We are still having a great time & being safe!

Love to all!

Sounds like you two are having a blast! Reading your descriptions and seeing your pictures, I can almost smell the wonderful fragrancel of Eastern WA - the earth, sage and crops... I love it over there!
Have a safe trip home. K-L
